Covenant Prayer

The Cathedral, the Church of the Ascension with All Saints and Trinity Methodist Church.

Almighty God,
whose most dear Son, Jesus Christ,
called his disciples to be one in him.
Look upon the Churches of our Covenant,
and draw us ever more deeply into that love
that overcomes doubt and fear,
so that we may reflect more faithfully
your desire for unity and work together for the coming of your kingdom.
This we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

2019 marks the 15th anniversary of the signing of the three churches covenant between The Church of the Ascension with All Saints, Trinity Methodist and Chelmsford Cathedral. The Covenant agreement which was duly signed in 2005 now adorns the cathedral vestry wall.

There are two important reasons why this covenant was agreed and signed:

(i)            It was inspired by the signing of the Anglican – Methodist Covenant in November 2003, and seeks to reflect and build upon a shared history (particularly ministry to the people of Chelmsford), our agreement in the apostolic faith, our shared understandings of the nature and mission of the church, and our agreement on the goal of visible unity.

(ii)           The Covenant was made to recognise the urgent need to repair some of our past divisions and a mutual narrowness of vision, and accordingly the impairment of the Gospel message and witness.

And so since 2005 the three churches of the Covenant have sought to realise more deeply our common life and mission, to share the distinctive contributions of our traditions and work in closer collaboration to witness and serve a needy world.

The Covenant Committee comprising clergy and members of the three churches meet regularly throughout the year, ensuring that various parish services and events are advertised corporately and shared where possible between the three congregations, including the occasional ‘pulpit swap’. A major get-together each year is for the Pastoral Assistants and area visitors of the three parishes who share a common ministry to the congregations and communities they serve, which usually involves a BBQ or a bun fight, and last year courtesy of Trinity Methodist a superb quiz with fish and chips which brought together members of the three ministerial teams and families for a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
